WHAT IS SOMATIC EXPERIENCING (SE)?
SE is a short-term and research-based, naturalistic approach to the resolution and healing of trauma and chronic stress developed by Dr. Peter Levine. This work is based upon the observation that wild prey animals, though threatened routinely, are rarely traumatized. Animals in the wild utilize innate mechanisms to regulate and discharge the high levels of energy associated with defensive survival behaviors. These mechanisms provide animals with a built-in “immunity’’ to trauma that enables them to return to homeostasis in the aftermath of highly-charged and life-threatening experiences.
SE is not therapy. Nearly all the work in SE sessions take place via a “reading” of the nervous system. In many instances, autobiographical information is not necessary and can oftentimes be harmful to the healing process. Through the SE process, “pendulation” and “titration” are utilized enabling the client to get relief, i.e., discharge pent up energy gradually and safely. Most clients feel an immediate relief from the first session and report that they experienced a return to their true self; something they typically felt only in childhood. The process is not only healing but very insightful as only the body holds the truth.
Leslie Boyd, MS, RYT, was a school counselor for 10 years. Through her own search for holistic healing, she discovered Somatic Experiencing, yoga and Ayurveda to be the most potent combination of practices. She utilizes all three of these domains in her practice with clients. Whether you are experiencing the manifestations of trauma, chronic stress or just wanting to find your path in life, this technique can help.
