Summer’s first passion was writing—she left home at 17 to study English literature at UC Santa Cruz. At 21, she graduated from UC San Diego with degrees in English literature, Spanish literature, and psychology. From there, she experienced a successful career as a health information writer, working for insurance companies, pharmaceutical marketing firms, and non-profit organizations. After the birth of her second child, Summer took some time off work to really bond with her baby. It was during this time that Summer rediscovered her love for yoga and noticed what a profound difference it made in dealing with the stressors of day-to-day life. Summer immediately wanted to deepen her understanding of this sacred, age-old practice and eagerly enrolled in the yoga teacher training program at Sage Yoga Studios, where she earned her RYT 200. It was then that Summer decided it was time for a full-on career makeover. She dropped her demanding, full-time writing career and now balances raising her three children (including a newborn!) and teaching up to five classes per week.
Summer credits yoga with helping her find purpose, confidence, patience, and a deeper awareness of the universe. For Summer, yoga has also been key in managing her chronic low back pain and carpal tunnel syndrome. Summer is passionate about teaching Yin Yoga, Gentle Yoga, Yoga Flow, and Restorative Yoga and hopes to help her students restore balance, find peace, and enjoy a deeper understanding of themselves through these styles of yoga. More recently, Summer has fallen in love with sound healing and often plays instruments like crystal bowls and drums in her classes. She also makes continuing education a priority and is quick to share facts from a new book or techniques from the latest workshop she attended with her students. Off the mat, Summer enjoys traveling, reading, gardening, cooking, visiting the San Diego Zoo and Disneyland with her children, and (of course) binging on the latest Netflix series with her husband, Mike.
